Where our wood comes from

Every piece of furniture at Prairie Barnwood is made from reclaimed boards and timbers, unless otherwise specified. All the barns we dismantle are located in Manitoba and Ontario. The barns are all 80 to 100 years old. The species are generally pine, fir, hemlock, and sometimes Manitoba oak. The wood we use is full of inherent character, blemishes, holes, and various textures. These are not considered defects. Only the elements, oxidation, and time cause the wood to turn this wonderful patina.

The barnwood is kiln dried before we uniquely craft each piece of furniture. You can expect saw marks and different textures between the various pieces of wood used in each piece of furniture, unless otherwise specified. These are the natural saw marks, natural imperfections, and weathered texture created over time. Occasionally, there may be some nail holes. These add character and are authentic to the history of the barn. When combined, the various textures and inherent character give each piece of furniture its own character – no two pieces are ever exactly alike and nor do we guarantee any piece will look exactly the same.

Damage Policy

If visible damage to the crate appears to be slight, please note it on the Proof of Delivery form. Do not destroy the crate. Upon inspection of the contents if you notice damage please take photos and send them to your sales representative or our shipping department. In most cases slight damage can easily be repaired with materials we will send to you.

If damage to the crate is severe, you have the option of immediately refusing delivery of your order or to inspect the contents before accepting. Either way, you must note the damage on the Proof of Delivery form. Failing to note damage will affect Prairie Barnwood Ltd.’s ability to file a damage claim on your behalf. If a replacement is necessary, the replacement will be shipped via the same method and to the same location originally chosen.

Solid wood reacts to the amount of humidity in your home. Long periods of low humidity will dry wood and cause splitting, cracking, and warping. Exposing your furniture to excessive dampness is also something that should be avoided. Controlling your indoor relative humidity year-round between 40% – 45% will eliminate these problems. When arranging furniture in your home, be thoughtful to avoid heat vents and direct sunlight to prevent discoloration, drying, and cracking.

Action on any claim for major warping/ major structural cracking may be deferred up to 1 year after the project completion to permit pieces to acclimate to temperature and humidity conditions. The deferral period does not count against the warranty period.
